Attendee FAQs

What is An Austin Author Affair?
An Austin Author Affair is a reader-first signing for all styles and genres of fiction.

Is An Austin Author Affair an 18 and over only event?
Yes. With the wide spectrum of authors attending to accommodate readers, the event will be adult, however the signing is open to the public. If you are concerned to how this may affect you, please feel free to contact an admin or staff to answer your questions.

Why was Austin, Texas chosen as the location?
Primarily, Austin was chosen because of the lack of gatherings that offered substantial volume for readers to mingle and discover authors west of the Mississippi. Most multi-author signings, conferences, and events happen on either the east or west coast. Austin is also centralized for many within the state of Texas and among the gulf coast states, with travel accessibility stretching into the western half of the country and northward.

How does An Austin Author Affair compare to other events of its size?
An Austin Author Affair debuts in 2015, and our hope is to provide an intimate and relaxed platform for readers to find authors and discuss all things books. While some conferences boast wild parties and eclectic venues, especially in our first year, we are attempting something a little more low-key and unpressured. Our goal in this year is to offer readers the opportunity for face time with authors, to explore the city, or to relax at the gorgeous hotel, a la vacation time.

Does that mean there will be no parties at all?
There will be a public meet and mingle the Friday before the signing as well as the evening ticketed party on Saturday. Private author parties are voluntary. More information regarding any private parties can be found on An Austin Author Affair’s Facebook page.

Will there be panels or workshops?
Not in this first year. As the event grows, more will gradually be added to accommodate requests and the needs of the readers.

What will the hotel room cost me?
The hotel will be $169 a night, double occupancy. Hotel reservation information will be given after event registration. Registration is free to attend the signing. Event registration will go live on May 22nd, 2014.

How many attendees can be in one room?
The maximum number in a double queen bed room is four. (There may be a fee or higher rate for third and fourth persons.)

When and how do I register for my room?
Personal hotel reservation information will be sent via email once registration is placed for the event. Reservations made by phone will not qualify for the convention room block or discounted room pricing.

Is there a shuttle from the airport?
There is no dedicated hotel shuttle available. However, there are many transportation options available for attendees, including a pay-to-ride shuttle service. You can find more information on the venue page. Please note that some options will require reservations.

Will there be a VIP option?
VIPs will cost $50, which includes one VIP reader book bag, and access to the AAA Saturday night Karaoke Party and open bar. Tickets are required purchases for access to the party. Food, drinks, and music are included in the cost.

When should I arrive?
This first year, readers are encouraged to arrive Friday to enjoy the meet and mingle welcome event Friday evening.

When is An Austin Author Affair over?
The event concludes the last morning of the event before noon.

When do I need to pay?
Any costs are due at registration, such as the VIP ticket pass. No refunds will be given for any reason. All sales are final.

If you need to cancel it will be up to you to find someone to take your ticket and pay you directly. It will also be up to you to notify the event coordinator of the name change (including email address) for the ticket exchange.

When is the book signing?
The book signing is Saturday 12-5 at the hotel.

Will there be any special access passes for press or industry?
No.

Does An Austin Author Affair allow models?
No. The purpose to being a reader-first event is to allow readers to connect with the authors they read and love.

Are cameras and pictures allowed?
Yes! Please respect any author's or reader’s wish to not be photographed, but otherwise, have fun! Take as many as you want!

Can I bring my own books to be signed?
Yes, but please keep it limited as not to monopolize an author’s time. Many are interested in meeting them, and they should have the chance to.

For those bringing in books, they will need to be labeled before entering and checked again before exiting the book signing. Please be patient through this process.
